Who is Travis Baldree?

Travis Baldree is the author of the popular bestselling fantasy novel Legends & Lattes, about an orc who decides to hang up her sword – giving up her years of fighting and mercenary work – and open a coffee shop in a bustling town where coffee is unheard of.

Legends & Lattes was Baldree’s first published novel, and was nominated for the 2022 Goodreads Choice Awards (Best Fantasy Category).

It was also nominated for the 2023 Nebula Award for Best Novel, and the 2023 Hugo Award for Best Novel.

Legends & Lattes Series In Order

Legends & Lattes is a “low-stakes” cozy fantasy story that’s been described as a combination of Dungeons & Dragons and Animal Crossing.

It has a somewhat similar vibe to The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune. Both of these novels have helped the cozy fantasy genre gain a recent surge in popularity (which I am very happy about!).

Legends & Lattes was a breakout bestseller in 2022 (the year it was first published), and continues to be popular on Bookstagram. And don’t worry: there’s a prequel coming soon!

Here are more cozy fantasy books to read, to help get you through the wait until the next Legends & Lattes series book comes out!

And now, here’s a breakdown of the Legends & Lattes series:

Legends & Lattes (Book #1)

Synopsis: A battle-worn orc decides to give up her past mercenary life and open a coffee shop for travelers – despite the fact that no one in her new town even knows what coffee is. Of course, things don’t exactly go according to plan – especially when her past comes back to haunt her.

There’s a love-able cast of characters, some romance, lots of coffee and pastries, and low-stakes (but still exciting) fun! I loved this book and didn’t want it to end. It feels like a warm hug, and is a perfect read for relaxing.

Publication date: Originally published in February 2022, then acquired & published by Tor (in the U.S.) in June 2022.

Bookshops & Bonedust (Book #0)

Synopsis: Technically, this is a prequel to Legends & Lattes, but it was written (and will be published) afterward. It follows Viv (the orc from Legends & Lattes) earlier in her journey, while she is still in her questing/adventuring phase of life.

After sustaining an injury, she finds work at a bookshop and starts to learn what it’s like to live a quieter, more peaceful life. And of course, she makes some friends along the way!

Publication date: November 7th, 2023 (U.S.) in paperback

Do I need to read these books in order?

The Legends & Lattes books are technically considered standalone novels, with some repeating characters and set in the same world. They can be read in any order!

If you want to read them in order of publication, start with Legends & Lattes.
