2024 Book to Film Adaptations (Movies & TV Series)

Every year I like to make a list of new television shows and movies based on books that are releasing that year. I try to track them and watch (and/or read) as many as I can!

(I’ve shared similar posts in the past, like this list of fall 2023 book adaptations and December 2023 movies & TV shows based on books).

It’s so fun to see your favorite books brought to life on the big (or small) screen. Sometimes, the adaptations stay really true to the source material, and sometimes they’re more loosely-inspired by it.

Either way, it’s always exciting to see the casting and the story brought to life through a different medium.

No matter what your favorites genres are, there are plenty of exciting options to choose from. 🙂

If you love adaptations like I do, check out my 2024 book-to-film adaptations challenge. It’s like book bingo, where you can track your reading/watching throughout the year!

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles

A Gentleman in Moscow book cover

Genre: Historical Fiction

Order on Amazon | Order on Bookshop.org

This beautifully-written historical fiction novel follows a Russian aristocrat in 1922 who is sentenced to a decades-long house arrest in the attic of an old, grand hotel.

I loved this book, and I highly recommend reading it before the TV adaptation – starring Ewan McGregor – comes out!

I’m a huge fan of McGregor, and I can’t wait to see him bring Count Rostov’s character to life.

(Releasing March 29th, 2024 on Paramount+ with Showtime)

Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty

Genre: Mystery/Thriller

Anyone who loved the TV adaptation of Big Little Lies (like I did) will be excited to hear about Liane Moriarty’s newest adaptation!

Apples Never Fall follows four grown siblings – all former tennis stars – who become embroiled in a murder scandal.

(Limited series releases March 14th, 2024 on Peacock)

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch

Dark Matter book cover

Genre: Science Fiction, Mystery/Thriller

Order on Amazon | Order on Bookshop.org

This science fiction thriller follows a man named Jason Dessen. He’s walking home one day when he’s suddenly knocked out, and wakes up on a gurney surrounded by strangers.

Impossibly, everything he knows about his life has changed – his wife and son no longer exist as he knew them.

I really enjoyed this high-octane, twisty novel. There’s a reason it’s so popular! And of course, I can’t wait to watch the TV series starring Jennifer Connelly and Joel Edgerton.

(Releasing May 8th, 2024 on Apple TV+)

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson

Caste book cover

Genre: Non-Fiction/History/Sociology

Order on Amazon | Order on Bookshop.org

There are so many superlatives I’d use to describe this profound non-fiction book, but none quite do it justice. It’s enlightening and devastating all at once. There’s something on every page that deserves to be shared and discussed.

Wilkerson draws comparisons between the different caste systems of America (race-based), India, and Nazi Germany (and beyond). She describes how race became a factor that determined (essentially ‘ranked’) each human’s place in American society, and how that thinking still exists today – whether consciously or subconsciously.

I’m so curious to see how this will be adapted into a movie, directed by Ava DuVernay. (FYI: the movie adaptation will have a different title: Origin.)

(Releasing January 19th, 2024 in theaters)

Salem’s Lot by Stephen King

Salems Lot book cover

Genre: Horror

Order on Amazon | Order on Bookshop.org

It’s no secret that I’m a huge Stephen King fan, and some of my all-time favorite book-to-film adaptations are inspired by his novels and short stories. (Here are some of the best Stephen King short story adaptations.)

So of course, I’m excited we’re getting another new one this year!

There is an original TV miniseries version of Salem’s Lot from 2004 (starring Rob Lowe and Donald Sutherland), in case you want to check that out first!

This new remake of Salem’s Lot stars Lewis Pullman, and is directed by Gary Dauberman.

(Release date unknown – will likely stream on Max)

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

Genre: YA Contemporary Fiction

Order on Amazon | Order on Bookshop.org

Bestselling author John Green is well-known for his heart-wrenching and heartwarming young adult novels. Some of his stories have already been adapted to film (Paper Towns and The Fault in Our Stars, among others).

This year, we’re getting a movie adaptation of his popular YA novel, Turtles All the Way Down. It centers around mental health, and Isabela Merced will star.

(Releasing Spring 2024 on Max)

Force of Nature (Aaron Falk #2) by Jane Harper

Force of Nature book cover

Genre: Mystery/Thriller/Crime

Order on Amazon | Order on Bookshop.org

Five women set out on a hike in the Australian bushlands during a rugged corporate retreat. Only four make it back.

As police investigator Aaron Falk delves into the missing woman’s life, he begins to question if the story the returning women have told is true.

This is the second book in the Aaron Falk trilogy, so you’ll probably want to watch (or read!) the first movie/book first, titled The Dry.

Eric Bana will reprise his role as police investigator Aaron Falk in this sequel adaptation.

Here are all of Jane Harper’s books in order.

(Releasing February 8th, 2024 in theaters in Australia – unknown U.S. release date)

The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin

The Three Body Problem book cover

Genre: Science Fiction

This award-winning sci fi novel opens with a group of humans who find a way to establish contact with aliens. Little do they know, they’ve essentially invited a hostile alien civilization to take over the Earth.

This TV series was adapted by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, who also adapted the Game of Thrones TV show.

(Releases March 21st, 2024 on Netflix)

Wicked by Gregory Maguire

Wicked book cover

Genre: Fantasy/Retelling

Order on Amazon | Order on Bookshop.org

While the novel Wicked is popular in its own right, the Broadway show of the same name brought the story even more fame and success.

Fans will be happy to hear it’s been adapted into a movie (separated into two parts)!

The movie adaptation of Wicked will star Cynthia Erivo (from Stephen King’s The Outsider) as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. Jonathan Bailey (from Bridgerton) and Michelle Yeoh are also attached to the film.

(Part one releases November 27th, 2024 in theaters)

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover

It Ends With Us book cover

Genre: Romance

Order on Amazon | Order on Bookshop.org

This bestselling romance novel about a woman torn between two men is being adapted into a film starring Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, and Brandon Sklenar.

Colleen Hoover (and this series) has a massive fanbase, so this film is very highly-anticipated!

(Expected release date is June 21st, 2024 in theaters)

Mickey7 by Edward Ashton

Mickey7 is the seventh iteration of an “expendable” body used for dangerous jobs at a colony base meant to colonize a new planet. Unfortunately, things are not going well: the atmosphere isn’t suitable for human life, and the food options are dwindling.

But when Mickey7 goes missing and returns to find a new body created, his problems intensify, because duplicate Expendables are forbidden.

The movie adaptation of this science fiction novel, titled Mickey 17, features a star-studded cast, including Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, and Naomi Ackie.

(Original release date was March 29th, 2024 in theaters, but the film has been delayed)

The Watchers by A.M. Shine

The Watchers book cover

She finds herself trapped among strangers, with terrifying creatures who watch them during the night. Who are these Watchers? And is there any hope of escape?

Horror fans, be sure to mark your calendars for this creepy film adaptation starring Dakota Fanning and Georgina Campbell (and produced by M. Night Shyamalan)!

(Expected release date: June 7th, 2024 in theaters)
