The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent (Book Review)

I was looking for a fun summery book, so I picked up The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent!

Set in a refurbished hotel on the Scottish coast, this story follows a young English woman – Elizabeth “Birdy” Finch – who secretly takes her best friend’s place as the new sommelier (wine expert). But she quickly realizes she’s bit off more than she can chew. Luckily, there’s an eccentric cast of characters at the hotel, including a very attractive chef, to help her out. Can they pull it off and make the hotel a success?

The Summer Job by Lizzy Dent: My Thoughts

This was a wonderfully fun summer read, especially perfect for those who love food and wine! There was so much drool-worthy food mentioned that I need to try at some point in my life.

What I liked about this book:

  • I’m always down for a story set in a hotel, and this setting was beyond dreamy! From the rugged and wild Scottish coast to the peaceful water and small fishing towns surrounding it, Lizzy Dent had me convinced this is a place I need to visit.
  • The romance was sweet. It did feel slightly rushed, but I was still rooting for the characters to get together.
  • The main character, Birdy, was a riot! Always cracking jokes. Her initial devil-may-care attitude made me a little wary of her at first, but she definitely grew on me.
  • The ‘found family’ theme. It always makes my heart happy!

Overall, The Summer Job is a light read, but also touches on deeper themes. It’s a lovely summer escape, with adventure, romance, friendship, and delicious food.
